Our Story

We have always believed that developmental competence management should be about development, not just compliance. Since our founding, we have worked to shift the industry mindset from traditional, box-ticking assessments to a data-driven, continuous improvement approach that empowers railway professionals to develop, grow, and operate more safely and efficiently.

Founded in 2008, AssessTech started with a clear purpose: to revolutionise competence management in the railway industry. At the time, many railway companies relied on paper-based records, rigid assessments, and reactive safety measures. This method was not keeping pace with the evolving demands of a modern, safety-critical industry.

Recognising this gap, we created a digital solution to track and improve competence. This vision led to the development of our AssessTech Competence Management System (ACMS) – a digital platform that is designed to give railway organisations real-time visibility of their workforce competence, reducing risk and creating a culture of continuous learning.

As the industry evolved, so did we. We quickly expanded beyond the base module of ACMS, developing a full ecosystem of modules to support railway organisations in building safer, more effective teams. Soon, members of the UK Railway started to embrace our data-driven approach, replacing outdated processes with real-time competence tracking, digital assessments, and automated reporting.

As training became a bigger part of the competence management landscape, we became a certified City & Guilds centre, offering accredited and non-accredited training programmes to develop assessors, verifiers, and operational leaders, followed by the introduction of AssessBook, our learning management system (LMS).

From our offices in Guildford, Surrey, we now work with 85% of the UK rail network and an expanding international client base.
