AssessTech’s IQA course plugs the verification gap at Rail Operations Group

We recently spoke with Kevin Langley, Interim Head of Operations at Rail Operations Group about why he chose to do the Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) Award course.

Here is what he had to say…

Why did you decide to do the course?

When I joined Rail Operations Group (ROG) I noticed that there was a gap in the safety and operations side of the business for verifiers.  Knowing that the verification skill contributes significantly to continual improvement, ROG had suggested my colleague Neil and myself both go on the course so we could be fully trained, qualified verifiers.

What made you choose AssessTech?

AssessTech had been used in other businesses in the area for verification and assessment. They were very complementary around AssessTech in terms of their structure, content and delivery of the courses and the flexibility they offered via a mixed learning environment of classroom and virtual learning.   Our course was delivered via Zoom which was excellent – it was cost effective and made good use of time, especially as in my current role at ROG I work 3 days a week.

How did you find the course?

I had been doing a lot of the quality side of the job even though I didn’t have the qualification, so had a vast amount of knowledge already in this area.  I went with an open mind as I wanted to explore different areas on the verification side of things that I may not have known, and the course clearly outlined the highly valuable internal quality assurance points around standards.

Kevin Langley, Interim Head of Operations, Rail Operations Group

How has the course helped you in your current job?

It has been highly worthwhile.  It has provided me with a clear understanding on the need to implement improvement plans and create effective plans for the future.  We are currently setting up meetings with our teams and assessors to agree what is necessary to improve our assessment processes and the course has provided me with the insights to consider additional angles and bring in different points of view.

Would you recommend it to others?

Absolutely, it was a great experience.  The fact that AssessTech offer the courses online is excellent; it’s easy for anyone to take part and undertake the follow up elements to the course.

For me the highlight was plugging the knowledge gaps around standards to ensure we are adhering to continual improvement across the company.

It was great for me to deliver the IQA training myself and get first-hand feedback what on our candidates think of our business and our courses.  Kevin was one of an experienced group of learners on this course, so it was excellent to hear that it was valuable and has already promoted some initiatives with ROG.
